The state of Mississippi has implemented a wind mitigation program to help property owners qualify for discounts on their windstorm insurance policies. The basis behind the program is to reward property owners who have features on their property that decrease the amount of damaged caused during windstorms. The decreased amount of damage means an insurance company would have to pay less to repair the property. Therefore, with the decreased liability the property owner should have to pay less for windstorm insurance than someone that does not have any wind resistant features on their property. The program started in May 2010 and is joins five other states, Florida, Louisiana, New Jersey, South Carolina and Alabama. Now that Mississippi has instituted the wind mitigation policies, homeowners should get a wind mitigation inspection done to quality for the discounts and insurance. A wind mitigation inspection will determine the eligible windstorm discount for a property. When performing a wind mitigation inspection, the inspector reports on the wind resistant features of the property, including the house elevation, roof pitch and type, window types, door types, garage door, wind reinforcements and shutters. The inspector will take around an hour to perform the inspection. The completed report is usually completed within 24 hours and is submitted to the policy insurance agent, along with documented pictures of the wind resistant features. This is very exciting news for Mississippi as any opportunity to save money on windstorm insurance is a great benefit.
The first insurance company to begin offering the wind mitigation discounts is State Farm, who has opening the discounted savings for homes and rental property. According to the Mississippi Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney, the approved wind mitigation discount program will apply to new construction and retrofits to older homes.
The amount discounted on the windstorm policy usually ranges from 8 to 30 percent. The discounted amount depends on the wind resistant features mentioned previously in this article. To review in more detail, the features, see the descriptions below.
